Week 1 Tectonic Plates
Tectonic plates
Caribbean Plate
The majority of Belize is situated on the Caribbean Plate, which is a relatively small tectonic plate located to the southeast of the larger North American Plate. This plate extends through much of the Caribbean region, including Central America.
Subduction Zones and Faults: The Caribbean Plate interacts with several neighboring plates, including the North American Plate to the north and the Cocos Plate to the south. Belize's position on the Caribbean Plate means that it experiences the tectonic activity associated with the boundary zones of these plates.
Belize's northern boundary is marked by the North American Plate, which includes much of North America and the surrounding regions.
Plate Interaction: The interaction between the Caribbean and North American plates results in compressional forces, which are responsible for creating faults and mountain ranges, although Belize itself does not have any major mountain ranges from this interaction. Boundary Types: The boundary between the Caribbean Plate and the North American Plate near Belize is classified as a transform fault, meaning the plates slide past each other horizontally.
